Forging Rich, Sustainable Lives
Through Education and Action

Uttarakhand, located in the Central Himalayas of northern India, is a fragile ecological zone where human activities can cause extensive land degradation and significant societal impacts.

Our mission is to develop, through education and action, cohesive communities empowered to create rich, sustainable lives for themselves and future generations. Our long-term commitment is based on our belief that sustainability will become a way of thinking throughout the region.

Working and learning together, our Centre and communities in this area not only develop a deeper understanding of the interactions among the different parts of the village ecosystem, but also of the conflicts being generated between modern views on development and traditional ways of life. The inclusive, collaborative women’s groups make and implement decisions about what is best for them, their families and their villages. Balwadis for pre-schoolers enable women to go about their work in fields knowing their children are safe, learning, and well cared for. In schools, children (ages 11-14, grades 6-8) conduct first-hand investigations – quantifying the resources used and produced in their villages and analyzing what is necessary to sustain the desired quality of life. Workshops and informal networking enable the Centre and community-based organisations to develop our capabilities and support our collective endeavours. A variety of other activities stem from and contribute to these major programmes and our overall mission.

By exchanging ideas and gaining insights from other environmental educators, researchers and organizations around the world, we also learn and advance our work.
